The Beatles "1" Apple 2000 If you combine US and UK figures, the Beatles had a total of 27 #1s, a figure only Elvis can top. So why not put them all on one CD? Those money-hungry leeches at EMI couldn't see a reason, and so we have this. Questionable motivation aside, it is, of course, great. It's got to the point where it's such an urban legend that every Beatles song is a classic that it actually takes guts to point out that this isn't quite true. So here I go: "Love Me Do" is not great. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, better than anything most people will ever write, but compared to the towering brilliance of, say, "Ticket to Ride", "Hello, Goodbye", "Something", "Come Together", or just about any other song on this collection, it falls a little short. The fact is that almost forty years later, these songs are still a part of all our lives, to the point that you probably know almost all of them already. I have a rule that I don't give 10 out of 10 to best-of CDs, but if I was ever going to start, this would be it. [9]
